Plumbing World – Invercargill
A sleek black and white finish and a great location have created an attractive new shopping destination for ‘DIYers’ and plumbers in Invercargill.
The all new Plumbing World has recently opened on Bill Richardson Drive, with a 1062sqm premises which caters for trade and the public through specific warehouse and showroom areas.
The building utilises Coresteel’s cold form Bracketless Portal System, including bird-resistant purlins in the warehouse area. The structure of the front office area also required complex engineering, which Coresteel managed in-house.
After 12 years of growth in the region, Mainfreight Taupo was on the lookout for a new site for their transport depot. Now located just a few kilometres from the town centre and right next to the Taupo Bypass, the company is perfectly positioned for the future.
The new 1340sqm structure utilises Coresteel’s Bracketless Portal System, allowing for an 800sqm, secure storage space, and a 540sqm drive-through canopy for 24-hour, all-weather loading. The canopy features an 18m clear span, with no supporting poles needed.
Within this space, a modern 50sqm open plan office and reception provides a sound-resistant area for the four depot staff day-to-day. Extra office space allows local and line haul truck drivers to process paperwork day or night. During breaks, staff can enjoy a lunchroom with access to a private outdoor space.
The project brought with it a number of challenges unique to the transport industry. To reduce the risk of damage to the lower wall, a 2m minimum tilt slab design encompasses the entire building. And to combat damage to freight by bird mess, bird resistant purlins and flashings were used within the drive-through area to remove areas where birds can perch.
The corporate colours were also extremely important to Mainfreight and ‘Mainfreight blue’ was incorporated into the wall cladding, portals, and a number of the roller shutter doors. Large signage features on three of the walls and is backlit for 24-hour visibility.
Utilising the latest technology, the entire yard is enclosed by a smart-gate system, with separate swipe-card access to the secure lock-up space.
When STIHL SHOP Te Awamutu outgrew their current premises, owner Matt Hird began the exciting process of planning a new site and a purpose-built retail experience.
STIHL SHOP employs 13 staff members and stock a full range of STIHL products, Masport lawnmowers, and a range of ride-on mowers.
“There were some very exact specifications that needed to be adhered to as part of our role as a STIHL SHOP store. From the floor, carpets and lighting, to kitchen cabinets and of course the colour palette, there were a lot of boxes to tick,” says Matt Hird, STIHL SHOP owner.
“Coresteel had no problems making all of this happen seamlessly. Even when things were missed by us in the planning, on the spot changes weren’t a problem.”
Coresteel was also able to work to a tight time frame, to allow the shop to be ready before the mowing season began.
The STIHL SHOP building is just over 650sqm, including a 350sqm showroom, 120sqm of offices and storage, and a large workshop.
Firth’s 44-year-old site in East Tamaki was due for an upgrade. Due to the extent of the upgrade needed and plans for future growth, the decision was made to build a new plant at Winstone Aggregates’ Hunua Quarry in Papakura.
The company required a 70m x 70m building with a 9m high knee, with high safety standards and a strict timeline. Coresteel’s Tapered Box Beam structural system ticked all the boxes, allowing for a full 70m span across the width. The building also utilises the DonoBrace as a roof and wall bracing system.
With just under half a hectare of floor space, the plant is exceeding all expectations in terms of output. Using a number of new machines, kilns and moulding equipment imported from around the world, the plant can produce up to 50,000 blocks per day – four times the capacity of the former plant. A new set up has also reduced downtime, therefore increasing efficiency further.
Harvey Norman Distribution Warehouse
A purpose-built distribution warehouse that services Christchurch’s Harvey Norman stores now provides a centralised location for customers to pick up their big-ticket items.
A consolidation of three existing warehouses, the new distribution centre was designed specifically for the company’s needs, including precise inwards goods truck movements and a unique racking layout.
The building features a Tapered Box Beam structure, allowing for a clearspan of 40m across the building, and bird resistant features in the large canopy. At 2706sqm, the warehouse also includes a reception area/public entry, offices at either end, staff areas and a special MAF approved area.
