With over 90 independently-owned stores across New Zealand, ITM has easily become one of the most trusted building supply specialists in the business. Since first emerging in 1991, the company has grown from six entrepreneurial Kiwi’s to over 1600 employees nationwide. In light of this growth, Taupo’s ITM owner turned to Coresteel Buildings to design and build a modern facility that would reflect their company values, cater to their customers and raise ITM’s profile in the Central Plateau region.
Owners of the Coresteel Central Plateau franchise, Logan Frew and Lee Parker-Frew, have a strong relationship with Taupo ITM and its owner Warren Johnson. The two businesses have successfully collaborated in the past and were ITM’s first choice when it came to creating a bespoke building that would stand the test of time.
The new 1850m2 store, now located at Broadlands Road, makes great use of Coresteel’s unique Bracketless Portal System. With no supporting brackets or intrusive braces, the Bracketless Portal System is ideal for businesses looking to expand their space as it allows for the best utilisation of the floor and ceiling space. And it’s definitely safe to assume that ITM are enjoying their new space. Thanks to the additional room provided by Coresteel’s Bracketless system, the team now has more room for stock which has served its customers well so far.
“The sophisticated technology behind Coresteel’s system allows columns and rafters to be nested together and directly bolted, thus eliminating the need for obtrusive knee-bracing and providing our clients with more space than other standard structures,” says Logan.
“The Coresteel system is designed using purpose-built integrated computer software that models each structural element of the building. With this enhanced system, all structural elements are manufactured in the factory, cut to length and pre-drilled eliminating welding on site. This reduces construction time onsite and in turn makes the whole construction cost-effective.”
ITM’s new building was engineered to optimise the Coresteel system and incorporate speciality design features such as a tailor-made drive through. When approached with this special request, the Central Plateau team were more than happy to adjust their plans and create something bespoke that would benefit both ITM’s staff and clients.
“Logan and the Central Plateau team were fantastic to work with,” says ITM Taupo’s owner Warren. “Logan’s knowledge of the building process was invaluable. He was able to advise what would and wouldn’t work while ensuring the time frames were met.”
The finished building measures 30m x 45m, with a floor size of 1350m2, and features three lanes with cladding in Colorsteel Trimrib. While the humble drive-through may have begun with motorists grabbing a quick bite between destinations, innovative businesses like ITM are now taking full advantage of its many benefits. Customers can now pick up their building goods faster, avoid long queues and enjoy a more streamlined shopping experience. Best of all, the two 7m x 5m drive through doors have made vehicle access a dream – whether you’re driving a truck or towing a trailer – while the cantilever canopy provides undercover parking for those rainy days.
So the two businesses have another successful collaboration under their belt and as Lee says, “It’s been a true pleasure to be involved with helping another local business grow.”
“Taupo ITM worked closely with the Coresteel team during the construction of our new purpose-built site. We found Logan to be very professional and knowledgeable, ensuring the build was completed within the estimated timeframes. Logan’s knowledge of the building process was invaluable, being able to advise the best practice for positive outcomes. We could not be happier with the result and would happily recommend Logan and his team.”Warren Johnson, Director, Taupo ITM
