It was a ‘mixed bag’ for Coresteel Manawatu operator Geoff "SOS" Spencer, who competed in Round 5 of the V8 Ute Championship earlier this month.
The event was run as a support class to the ITM 500 V8 Supercar event at Pukekohe, which attracted 116,000 spectators from 6-8 November.
“We had a plan in place for race three, as we had banked our best set of tyres with the aim of getting up the inside on the start into turn two and three. But we were a bit keen and had a ‘coming together’ with Dirty Dave, which broke our steering and sent me straight into the tyre wall. It’s all about the entertainment and it made good TV for the Coresteel brand,” says Geoff.
Of the 16 competitors, Geoff qualified 8th fastest, with only 0.5 seconds to pole position. Race 1 resulted in an 11th place finish and in Race 2 resulted in a 6th place finish.
“With the ute repaired, I’m now looking forward to the final round of the championship at Hampton Downs next weekend, from 27-29 November.”
