Coresteel Award for Electric Bike Innovator

The future looks bright for Tauhara College student Denis Mansell, who is the winner of the 2016 Tauhara College Coresteel Buildings Innovation Award.

Year 13 student Denis Mansell was part of the team that designed, built and raced an electric bike in the EVolocity Waikato competition.

He was also first in his Level 3 automotive and mechanical engineering classes and the recipient of the Graeme Bignall trophy for design and visual communication.

“We sponsor the Coresteel Buildings Innovation Award at Tauhara College to encourage a sense of innovation in the next generation of students. Denis has excelled in technology, innovation and creativity and we have no doubt he will continue to do well in the coming years,” says Lee Parker-Frew, Director, Coresteel Buildings Central Plateau.

The winning bike was made using an old bike found at the local rubbish dump, recycled materials from their school and scrap metal.

Denis and his team received a number of awards at the EVolocity Waikato competition. The team was placed first overall in the Bike Category – Waikato and nationally were placed second in the bike category, second for fastest electric vehicle, best rolling resistance and best economy run, and third for best circuit street race.

The regional school-level Coresteel Buildings Innovation Awards are a nation-wide initiative, spearheaded by a tertiary-level Coresteel Buildings Innovation Award at the University of Waikato.
